Marketing Plan Writing

Written in May 2020

In a university Marketing class, I worked on a quarter-long group project to develop a new product and create a comprehensive marketing plan. Our product was called Linguista, a portable and easy-to-use bookmark translator. We conducted surveys, analyzed possible market and ideal audience segments, and created Product, Place, Promotion, and Price strategies based on our research. Here are some snippets of my writing in the final report.

Opportunities in SWOT Analysis

Study Abroad

Study Abroad program participants have been increasing since at least the early 1990’s. In the 2017-2018 school year, 341,000 American students studied abroad while over 1 million international students came to the United States to study. With an increase in international study, language barrier issues are more prevalent. Students cannot rely on institutions to provide them with study books and materials in their native languages and hence, the need for translators is growing.

Language Learning Apps

Language learning apps like Duolingo and Rosetta Stone are becoming more popular, in addition to the preexisting need for educational language tools for students. Studies show that popular language learning tools verifiably improve one’s skills in other languages. Internationally, students study languages online an average 2-3 times a week, resulting in increased demand for these educational apps. Linguista provides the desired translation technology for the target market with convenience and tangibility.

Behavioral Segmentation

The number of people learning foreign languages has increased over the years. Furthermore, studying abroad has increased from 84,403 students studying abroad in 1994 to 341,751 students in 2017. People are actively pursuing other languages with 35% of 10–29 year olds using language learning apps, compared to only 17% of people older than 30 years old using them, leading us to pursue people 30 years old and under. Additionally, there has been an increase in purchasing of books in foreign languages. Overall, the study of foreign languages and foreign cultures has increased.

Positioning

Bookmark Translator aims to distinguish itself as a leading language translation device that not only increases literature accessibility but also convenience in use and storage. While larger competitors such as Google focus on conversational and virtual translation, Bookmark Translator focuses on grammatical and literary accuracy of printed materials designed with students and scholars in mind. Through its collaboration with Duolingo, Linguista’s bookmark translator has a highly accurate, machine translation mechanism. This technology doesn’t just decode the language, but actually understands it in the context of the original language in order to give a more accurate final translation.
